Security Fundamentals for Information Professionals

 
The Security Awareness course series is designed to give all information professionals the knowledge and tools to protect themselves and the sensitive information they use from security attacks.   It covers many simple ways to prevent security breaches and protect valuable data.  The twelve-module e-Course includes the following topics:

Security Awareness Overview (11 minutes)

This brief lesson will provide you with an overview of what security awareness actually entails. You will learn about the risks of poor security and the affect that it has on you and your organization.

Social Engineering (14 minutes)

Social Engineering is a very important topic in security awareness. Here you will learn about what social engineering is, the methods used and how to defend yourself from these types of attacks.

Identity Theft (18 minutes)

Identity theft is one of the hottest security topics in the 21st Century. This lesson will help you to get a better understanding of what identity theft is, how identities are stolen, how to reduce the risk of identity theft and how to handle an identity theft incident.

Data Classification (15 minutes)
Data is a part of our daily lives. Learning to identity the different classes of data within an organization can help to reduce security incidents. This lesson will help you to understand the need for data classification and how to use it and enforce it as a method in reducing security breaches.

Backups (15 minutes)
If you’ve worked with critical data or have ever lost an email or a file because you didn’t back it up then this lesson is for you. In this lesson you will learn about the importance of backups, the types of backups, how to perform a backup and where to store them. You will be given a brief tutorial of the Windows backup utility.

Passwords (22 minutes)
Passwords are an important part of your computer security. Writing them down can negate their effectiveness. This lesson will help you to examine the differences between weak and strong passwords, how to develop strong passwords that you will remember, common password policies and going beyond the password for secure access.

Viruses, Worms and Trojans (22 minutes)

A computer being infected by a virus, worm or trojan horse can bring down a computer, a network, and destroy data. In this lesson, you will learn more about what these things are and how to protect your data. You will also learn about spyware and the signs that it is on your computer. You will also look at antivirus best practices.

Secure Computer Use (31 minutes)

Perimeter security is a critical part of any security plan. This lesson will explore physical security, desktop security, laptop security, screen savers, mobile phone/PDA security, Firewalls and encryption. You will also learn about patches, updates, and how to properly dispose of electronics.

Secure Internet Use (53 minutes)
Most people that use a computer also access the Internet. In this lesson, you will learn about the methods of using email and the internet more securely. Topics include understanding how to be more secure with your email usage, SPAM and how to reduce its effects, Web browsing and Pop Ups, and best practices for Instant Messaging.

Intellectual Property and Software Piracy (14 minutes)

This lesson will explore the legal side of security by covering topics that include intellectual property, copyrights, the types of software piracy and the risks and effects these issues can impose on an individual and an organization.

Security Policy and Incident Response (14 Minutes)

Security policies help an organization define how it will handle security incidents. This lesson will explain the importance of a security policy and evaluate the areas a security policy may cover by providing examples of statements that may be included in a Security policy.

Education and Continual Awareness (10 minutes)
This is the final lesson and it will summarize what has been covered in this course as well as provide a closing discussion on the importance of continual security awareness education.
